Getting What I Want

image“You can’t always get what you want, You can’t always get what you want, You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need!”
Can anyone read that without hearing Jagger’s cool, distinctive vocals in their head?! I even hear the London Bach Choir coming in with their “Ahhhh”s!

Whether Mick Jagger was talking about love, sex, politics or drugs in his famous lyrics, he was expressing an essential human truth- there is a difference between our human DESIRES and our human NEEDS…though we might not get exactly what we want, if we try, we might just get what we need! I remember challenging my boys when they were young and were appealing to me about something they didn’t have and “needed”… Mom:”Okay, Is that really a need,…or maybe a want?” Of course everything seems a need when we’re young!…even sometimes when we get older!! But it got them thinking about the difference. Then they starting listing things they NEEDED to live- like oxygen, sunshine, food and water. It became clearer and clearer that most of what they thought were needs were really wants they could live without. We even began talking about the things we want, and if they’re all even good for us! How do we know? So many things seem like they will satisfy, but in the end they don’t deliver what we want OR need (another Stones song!)

Well I don’t know, maybe like I heard my boys appeal to me about what they “needed,” God heard me this morning appeal to Him about something I “need”! Believe me, I know God has blessed me with so many “things” in my life…EVERY good gift I’ve ever received is by His Hand. He wants to give me the desires of my heart, but this morning I heard Him say, “I AM ALL YOU NEED.” Beneath those Words was the clear message, “I want to be the DESIRE of YOUR HEART.”-

“Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
(Psalm 37:4)

God satisfies as nothing on earth can-
“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.  You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”
(Isaiah 58:11)

“[He] who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
(Psalm 103:4-5)

And if it’s not already clear,…
“…my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
(Phil 4:19)

I suppose if God put His own twist on the Stones song, it might sound like this-
“You CAN always get what you want, You CAN always get what you want, You CAN always get what you want, and you don’t have to try, if you just realize, I AM ALL YOU NEED!”

Sorry, I’m Busy. (Buried Under Satan’s Yoke)

image

I recall several years back my dear cousin Juli up here visiting from N Carolina- we were sitting at my parents kitchen table together catching up on our lives, and naturally arrived at the subject of busyness. I will never forget Juli taking a pen and writing out the following acronym:
B. – Buried
U. – Under
S. – Satan’s
Y. – Yoke

Wow. It never hit me so hard that busyness is far more than a psychological/mental issue with physical consequences,.. it is most importantly a SPIRITUAL issue. It’s easy to view things from the limited perspective of our visible, somewhat controllable lives, but let us never forget there are spiritual forces at play above every earthly event in our lives. The Devil delights in nothing more than robbing us of time with our Savior! He knows if he can disconnect us for any amount of time from our Energy Source, not only will we suffer the physical (and other) earthly consequences, but better yet we will suffer spiritually- as being “unplugged,” we are stumbling through the dark instead of walking in the Light. Then we become a toy in his play chest for all things bad to happen.

Sleep is well known for its healing, restorative effects on the mind and body of the human. God designed it that way. Eight hours of sleep is critical for most of us to live healthy, productive lives. Without it, we become sluggish, inattentive, forgetful, stressed, ill. No drug is going to make up for lost sleep and good rest. Our bodies need it to be replenished each day. While sleeping, blood flows to our muscles stimulating cell growth. Our minds and bodies are rejuvenated for another day of life!

Imagine what robbing us of SPIRITUAL rest can do…the Devil is well aware! If God designed our physical bodies to require good rest to function well, what does He require for us to function well spiritually? The answer is TIME WITH HIM! There is no other source of strength than spending time with Jesus Christ to restore our spirits and our walk with the Living God! We need to COME to HIM each and every day for restoration of our souls and Divine Strength for a new day. Listen to Jesus’s Words in Matthew 11:28-30:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Feeling tired and worn out??? Yes, get your needed sleep! But don’t ever allow yourself to be unplugged from your TRUE Energy Source! Nothing is more important than spending time each day with Your Father who is granting you the day you have in the first place. Come to Him, sit with Him, listen to Him. You will never have a PEACE like this- only the Father can grant it!

Most Thankful for…

imageI have to say that amidst the multitude of undeserved blessings in my life of health, family, friends, church, home, country, pets, nature and so much more, I am MOST thankful to God for His AMAZING GRACE to my life! That He would go to the lengths He did to save me from an eternity in hell and secure a tearless, Joy-filled future for me living in His Glorious Presence is beyond any love I can imagine. “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” (2 Cor 9:15). Thank You Father for the Gift of Your Son! Thank You Jesus for Your incredible Love!!!

Bright and Morning Star

image“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.”- Ps 143:8

Family in Christ Jesus,

Ah…how beautiful are the words from David’s lips to His King! Yes, let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, Lord!

I have always tried to meet with the Lord in the morning, though in some seasons of life it has been more difficult than others (new baby, work, etc.). I just think what a perfect time to meet with God… as soon as He awakens me to another day of my limited earthly life! Before any event of the day begins, while others are sleeping and not even traffic can be heard, just a few birds chirping. God blessed me with another day of life… I thank and praise Him! I draw to Him and seek His Word, His guidance and wisdom for my day, as I know not what lies ahead, but I know Who is with me. Why would I start my day without the One Who has given it to me?  A friend once told me, “Nan, starting your day without the Lord is like going onstage to play a concert and not having tuned your instrument!” Ugh!! Who would want to hear that?! No doubt, there have been days that in my dissonant words/behavior, my family and friends must have wondered, “What on earth is she playing?!” Ha! Well, could you wait just a moment while I go tune myself up?? …oh, no time now,..have to get to the next song! Yep, if we don’t put God first, we sometimes don’t put Him at all, do we? Like when I neglect to give Him the first-fruits of our income, and He ends up with the scraps after all the bills have been paid and shopping trips made. He deserves FIRST place, not anything less! (Can anyone hear me talking to myself here?)

Anyway, I just thought this Psalm was so beautiful, as it reminds me that this Relationship between me and God is powered and sustained by HIS unfailing Love, not mine! That even if I fail to give Him first place in my life, He has put me first place in His heart…. The Blood Christ shed for me proves that! “We love because He first loved us.”-1 John 4:19. And to think that He waits for me every morning, anticipating my first thought towards Him, makes me desire Him even more. Does this sound like a Love Relationship? You bet it is! You, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, know exactly what I am talking about. Is it any wonder Jesus Christ is called our “bright and Morning Star”? Good morning, Lord, Good morning!

Making a Wrong Turn

imageBrothers and Sisters in Christ,

Have you ever made a wrong turn on the way to your destination and wondered if you’d ever find your way back? No- this is not a Guys-only question, girls! I did it just a couple days ago in a town I was unfamiliar with, and upon realizing my mistake, I developed a whole new language and disposition on life. ..Ughh! How fast that can happen for me! Worse yet, my young son was sitting next to me, so yes, he got to hear all the colors of the rainbow as I struggled to find my way back to the right road. I don’t know how many miles I drove on that long, wrong road, but it seemed like forever before I found the right road home.

I was thinking this morning about how that “detour” I took was a diversion off more than just the road I was on. When I realized I was not on the right road, I chose for myself a path of frustration, anger and self-dependence to carry me. Can anyone relate?? Did I forget that my Lord was right there with me the whole time, just waiting for my eyes to turn to Him? Waiting, waiting… Did I really think I was on my own trying to find my way back? Well I wasn’t. My Lord was right there with me getting a full dose of my newfound attitude while I tried to figure it out on my own.

You’ve heard the expression, “Keep your eyes on the prize!” That’s actually very Biblical, isn’t it? 1Cor 9:24-27 says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” Well on Wednesday, I was running aimlessly. I absolutely felt like a boxer beating the air!! Why?? Not because I took my tires off the path home, NO– because I took my eyes off the Prize!!! I did not trust that my Lord would steer me back to the way home. Well, in His Gracious Love, He did anyway,… But it took a lot longer than if I would have taken a deep breath, exhaled a prayer and gone to Him in the first place!

So this morning I have been praying for self-control…Go figure. 1 Peter 5:8-9a says, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” Lack of self-control turns the knob of the door open for Satan to enter the scene, and you can be sure the result will be bad. Self-control is not self-explanatory… It is a fruit of the Spirit of the Living God! (Gal 5:22-23). Ask for it- you will receive it! (Matt 7:7)

My long ride home also reminded me of the most beautiful truth: that my Daddy stands waiting with arms open wide at ALL TIMES for me to run to back to Him!!! If I do forsake His teaching not to veer to the right or left, but to keep my eyes affixed upon His Son (Heb 12:12), He has mercy on me in His infinite, unfailing Love, and He patiently waits for my return (prodigal daughter!). He never takes His eyes off me, always yearning for mine to connect with His to bring me safely home. Thank You, Abba, Father!!! I love you, Daddy!!!!
